Self-Interactive Piano

The Self-Interactive Piano is a live performance system for the Yamaha Disklavier, where the piano “listens” to the performer in real time and generates musical responses. This system transforms the piano into an improvisational partner with its own autonomous musical logic on stage.

ALGORITHMIC RESPONSE

The MIDI data from the performer’s playing is sent into a SuperCollider patch and processed using specific algorithms:

Pitch Analysis: Different pitch ranges trigger different response behaviors, such as multi-layer looping patterns, repeated melodic fragments, or immediate automatic playback.
Real-time Generation: The system analyzes incoming notes to construct counter-melodies and accompaniments on the fly.

CONTROL INTERFACE

The dynamics (velocity) and textural density of these generated responses are controlled by an iPad running TouchOSC:

OSC Communication: Sends OSC messages to influence the system’s behavior in real time.
Live Modulation: Allows for toggling interaction modes and adjusting loudness seamlessly during performance.
